After the PVA and fabric sample I had some colour PVA left over. It seemed a shame to waste it so I used some of the scraps of hand-dyed yarn from the weavette pieces and pushed them into the beaker until the yarn was covered. I allowed the piece to dry completely in the beaker […]

Project 1 – Moulding from a surface – PV
For this sample I used an old plastic bowl which I covered in clingfilm to assist with removing the finished moulding. After cutting strips of waste lace fabric from an old curtain I applied the fabric to the mould using dilute PVA. To make the piece more interesting, I added Brusho to the PVA, varying […]
Project One – Moulding from a surface –
For this exercise I organised a range of materials to make impressions on/embed in air-drying clay. The clay is natural grey and does not obviously lend itself to colouration (possibly painting post-drying?). For the first samples I therefore selected remnants of a rough cotton rug warp in a natural stone colour to harmonise with the […]
Assignment Three Artists – Victoria Ferr
Victoria Ferrand-Scott is an artist who works in multiple media, including fine art, photography and video alongside sculpture. Ferrand-Scott works extensively with what most would regard as ordinary, mundane materials – concrete and other mouldable, pourable building compounds. These are transformed into extraordinary, fluid, tactile forms using latex and flexible fabric structures. It is this […]
Assignment Three Artists – George Segal
George Segal (1924-2000) was a prominent figure aligned to the Pop Art movement. Born in New York, he was an artist and art tutor (alongside spells working as a poultry farmer to support his parents and family). His first sculpture in his iconic style was inspired by a student at an adult education class who […]
Research: Assignment Three – Air-drying
For moulding experiments I identified a number of moulding clays which I think could be used as both the material being cast and as the material to hold the impression. Commercial products included air-drying clay, polymer clay (Fimo), modroc. I also researched homemade dough options and found a selection of ‘playdough’ type recipes and salt […]
Research: Assignment Three – Mouldable f
This was an interesting idea I stumbled on while researching powertex. It’s a means of using wax and oil to create a fabric that can be moulded whilst remaining soft and pliable. At the moment I’m not quite sure what I would do with this but it would be fun to try! http://www.instructables.com/id/Moldable-Fabric-for-Doll-Clothes/?ALLSTEPS http://artaddworksforme.blogspot.co.uk/2008/07/fabric-hardener-experiment.html
Research: Assignment Three – Paverpol, P
Paverpol ™ is a water-based textile, weatherproof and washable (when set) hardening medium used for sculpting fabrics and other materials. It is transparent but can be coloured. This was one video about using dried moss and I thought this could be adapted easily for use with fibres, shreds of fabric or waste yarn and embellishments. […]
Research: Assignment Three – Kinetic San
Kinetic sand is a mix of 98% fine sand and 2% polydimethysiloxane (a silicone oil which sounds scary but is apparently used to reduce the froth in deep-fat frying and making jalapeno poppers!) so is considered non-toxic. http://grimlockmanor.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/sand-casting-skull-with-kinetic-sand.html Its advantages are its ability to be heated to high temperatures without any change and to retain […]
Assignment Three Research – Moulding wit
‘The idea for Sugru was developed by Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh from Kilkenny, Ireland. Ní Dhulchaointigh studied product design as a post-graduate research student at the Royal College of Art where she conceived the idea for the substance in 2003 whilst using mixtures of standard silicone sealants and sawdust in her work.’ ~ Wikipedia Sugru is […]
